FAVORITE MUSIC

This is a page dedicated to music I enjoy listening to. Of course, this list is inexhaustive due to the sheer amount of songs I find pleasure in listening to on a regular basis. Perhaps more will be added in the future...

CARDIACS - Is This The Life

Hong enjoys Cardiacs' music more than I do, but I still find their music enjoyable. Many artists, such as Mike Patton of Faith No More have found the eclectic instrumentation and esoteric lyricism of this band influential. I like this song in particular because it wouldn't sound completely out of place amongst The Cure's discography. Tim Smith's voice sounds eerily similar to Robert Smith's here, and no doubt it's not a coincidence.

THE CURE - Disintegration

Ah, yes, and speaking of The Cure... there are many songs from their discography that I could choose to put here. 'Let's Go To Bed' is easily a favorite of mine, but the title track off of their 1989 album 'Disintergration' is a classic. The gloomy instrumentation, Robert Smith's desperate and pessimistic vocals, and the bleak lyricism all contribute to the depressing atmosphere of the song. It's one I find myself returning to often due to its sheer relatability.

SIOUXSIE & THE BANSHEES - Slowdive

I'll go ahead and say it - Siouxsie is idolic. Without praising her appearance too much, I must express how sultry I find her. But that's neither here nor there, she may have an iconic appearance but she is first and foremost the musically-gifted frontwoman of one of the most important post-punk bands in history. So many bands out there are known for their unique appearance, while their music is less remarkable and easily forgettable (cough cough Adam and the Ants cough cough). Siouxsie & the Banshees do not fall under that curse, as they have gifted us with so many iconic songs.

FAITH NO MORE - Midlife Crisis

Admittedly, I do not listen to Faith No More as often as I should. I truly do admire Mike Patton, but most of his projects are too "out there" for me, so to speak. Most of his work is more Hong's taste than mine, but I MUST say that I am the one who introduced them to him in the first place and deserve credit for that. If not for me, their music taste wouldn't be as varied and cultured as it is now.

MOSS ICON - Mirror

One of the things I like about Moss Icon is how relatable their music is to me. Especially this song in particular, you can really feel the emotion coming from every angle. It's a great listen when I'm feeling particularly upset about one thing or another. It's highly therapeutic.

KATE BUSH - Wuthering Heights

Hong HATES this song, and I mean they HATE it. Their disdain towards this song is cartoonishly humorous. In their words it's "boring and pretentious and totally lame and SO NOT COOL AT ALL" (read this in their voice for maximum effect). 'Wuthering Heights' is a great novel and a literary classic, even if they can't see it; and Kate Bush is such a lovely woman. Of course, I had to include the music video here since she's so delightfully dreamy.

KMFDM - Flesh

KMFDM is one of my favorite bands, although if you knew me personally that would be very apparent. Their album 'NIHIL' is one I often play on repeat, and this song in particular is oftentimes stuck in my head. Their 'SYMBOLS' album is good too, but it's overrated. They have such a large catalog of music to choose from their many albums.

MONKS OF DOOM - Trapped

Monks of Doom is a side project involving members of the band Camper Van Beethoven -- a band I do like but don't listen to much anymore. I particularly like this song mainly because it describes struggles I have faced as well. I mainly enjoy this song due to the 'relatability' factor of the lyrics, but the instrumentation and rhythm are just as important to me here.

MAZZY STAR - Fade Into You

This song makes me feel drowsy and melancholic, but that's why I enjoy listening to it so much. If all women were like Hope Sandoval, maybe the world would be a better place. One can only imagine. On an unrelated note, this album has one of the best covers I have ever seen.

THE CULT - Sanctuary

...And last but not least, I had to include my favorite song. Well, favorite song is a bit of an understatement, but I can't think of any stronger words. The guitar here is interesting, according to the mythos behind this song, the intro was played using a violin bow and every effects pedal the band had was used to create that iconic 'echoing' effect. The lyrics and melody tell a hypnotic tale of a wild-eyed woman who you can find solace in, even when the world feels like it's ending.
